The Sixth Borough is a New York fairy tale that reimagines the city’s past to reveal something essential about its soul.
Once upon a time, New York City was made up of six boroughs, not five. Nestled quietly in the Hudson River, beside the restless energy of Manhattan, was the Sixth Borough: a small, peaceful island where life moved at a gentler pace. And then, one day, without warning, the island began to drift away.
As the city watches the Sixth Borough slowly move out towards the open sea, New Yorkers are divided. Some scramble to save it, proposing elaborate plans to tether it in place. Others accept what feels inevitable. When the power is cut off, the island glows softly with fireflies from inside glass jars, illuminating a community determined to hold on to its sense of home even as it slips beyond reach.
Against this backdrop unfolds a tender love story. Avery, a young man from Manhattan, is separated from Annabelle, the girl he loves, as the distance between their worlds grows wider.
Faced with the choice to remain behind or chase what is being lost, Avery sets out by sailboat across open water, determined to follow the Sixth Borough, wherever it may go.
Set in an alternate history of 1930s New York, The Sixth Borough is a sweeping, intimate musical about loss and belonging, inevitability and hope.
It is a story about a city losing a part of itself and, in doing so, learning who it truly is.
With lyricism, warmth, and quiet wonder, The Sixth Borough invites us to consider what we carry with us when the ground shifts beneath our feet and how love endures even as the world drifts on.
The show marked the first collaboration between Eric Price and Will Reynolds. It contains a song “The Flowerpot Tree,” which later became the name of their production company.
The rights for the show are not available, but perhaps one day they will be. In the meantime, you can sing “Just Ahead’ and read this short story.
